Understanding Reactive Arthritis

]]>

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Reactive arthritis is a form of arthritis, or joint inflammation, which occurs as a “reaction” to an infection elsewhere in the body. Besides joint inflammation, reactive arthritis is associated with two other symptoms: redness and inflammation of the eyes (conjunctivitis) and inflammation of the urinary tract (urethritis). These symptoms may occur alone, together, or not at all.

Reactive arthritis is also known as Reiter’s syndrome, and your doctor may refer to it by yet another term, as a seronegative spondyloarthropathy. The seronegative spondyloarthropathies are a group of disorders that can cause inflammation throughout the body, especially in the spine. (Examples of other disorders in this group include psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and the kind of arthritis that sometimes accompanies inflammatory bowel disease.)

The symptoms of reactive arthritis usually last 3 to 12 months, although symptoms can return or develop into a long-term disease in a small percentage of people.

What Causes Reactive Arthritis?

Reactive arthritis typically begins about 1 to 3 weeks after infection. The bacterium most often associated with reactive arthritis is Chlamydia trachomatis, commonly known as chlamydia. It is usually acquired through sexual contact. Some evidence also shows that respiratory infections with Chlamydia pneumoniae may trigger reactive arthritis.

Infections in the digestive tract that may trigger reactive arthritis include Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia, and Campylobacter. People may become infected with these bacteria after eating or handling improperly prepared food, such as meats that are not stored at the proper temperature.

Doctors do not know exactly why some people exposed to these bacteria develop reactive arthritis and others do not, but they have identified a genetic factor, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) B27, that increases a person’s chance of developing reactive arthritis. Approximately 80 percent of people with reactive arthritis test positive for HLA-B27.

Who Gets Reactive Arthritis?

Overall, men between the ages of 20 and 40 are most likely to develop reactive arthritis. However, evidence shows that although men are nine times more likely than women to develop reactive arthritis caused by sexually acquired infections, women and men are equally likely to develop reactive arthritis as a result of food-borne infections. Women with reactive arthritis often have milder symptoms than men.

What Are the Symptoms of Reactive Arthritis?

Reactive arthritis most typically results in inflammation of the urogenital tract, the joints, and the eyes. Less common symptoms are mouth ulcers and skin rashes. Any of these symptoms may be so mild that patients do not notice them. They usually come and go over a period of several weeks to several months.

The arthritis associated with reactive arthritis typically involves pain and swelling in the knees, ankles, and feet. Wrists, fingers, and other joints are affected less often. People with reactive arthritis commonly develop inflammation of the tendons (tendinitis) or at places where tendons attach to the bone (ethesitis). In many people with reactive arthritis, this results in heel pain or irritation of the Achilles tendon at the back of the ankle. Some people with reactive arthritis also develop heel spurs, which are bony growths in the heel that may cause chronic (long-lasting) foot pain. Approximately half of people with reactive arthritis report low-back and buttock pain.

What Natural Anti Inflammatory Remedies are Available for Treating Reactive Arthritis?

CM8™ is an all-natural ingredient in natural supplements” target=”_blank”>natural supplements that functions in three different ways. First, it acts as a highly effective lubricant in the joints, muscles and other tissues, allowing them to move smoothly. Decrease or loss of morning stiffness is commonly noted shortly after commencing treatment. Next, CM8™ functions as a natural anti-inflammatory. Relief from swollen joints is often seen after the 4th or 5th week of treatment. Third, it is also an immune system modulator, which can be effectual against autoimmune diseases, such as arthritic conditions. CM8™ relieves joint pain at its source, reducing inflammation and irritation of the joints and tissues. It also has been helpful for many sufferers of muscle tension and fibromyalgia.

What Is the Prognosis for People Who Have Reactive Arthritis?

Most people with reactive arthritis recover fully from the initial flare of symptoms and are able to return to regular activities 2 to 6 months after the first symptoms appear. In such cases, the symptoms of arthritis may last up to 12 months, although these are usually very mild and do not interfere with daily activities. Approximately 20 percent of people with reactive arthritis will have chronic (long-term) arthritis, which usually is mild. Studies show that between 15 and 50 percent of patients will develop symptoms again sometime after the initial flare has disappeared. It is possible that such relapses may be caused by reinfection. Back pain and arthritis are the symptoms that most commonly reappear. A few patients will have chronic, severe arthritis that is difficult to control with treatment and may cause joint damage.

Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence

 • ISBN13: 9781594391187
 • Condition: New
 • Notes: BRAND NEW FROM PUBLISHER! BUY WITH CONFIDENCE, Over one million books sold! 98% Positive feedback. Compare our books, prices and service to the competition. 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed

Experienced martial artist and veteran correction officer Sgt. Rory Miller distills what he has learned from jailhouse brawls, tactical operations and ambushes to explore the differences between martial arts and the subject martial arts were designed to deal with: Violence. Sgt. Miller introduces the myths, metaphors and expectations that most martial artists have about what they will ultimately learn in their dojo. This is then compared with the complexity of the reality of violence. Complexity is one of the recurring themes throughout this work. Section Two examines how to think critically about violence, how to evaluate sources of knowledge and clearly explains the concepts of strategy and tactics. Sections Three and Four focus on the dynamics of violence itself and the predators who perpetuate it. Drawing on hundreds of encounters and thousands of hours spent with criminals Sgt. Miller explains the types of violence; how, where, when and why it develops; the effects of adrenaline; how criminals think, and even the effects of drugs and altered states of consciousness in a fight. Section Five centers on training for violence, and adapting your present training methods to that reality. It discusses the pros and cons of modern and ancient martial arts training and gives a unique insight into early Japanese kata as a military training method. Section Six is all about how to make self-defense work. Miller examines how to look at defense in a broader context, and how to overcome some of your own subconscious resistance to meeting violence with violence. The last section deals with the aftermath—the cost of surviving sudden violence or violent environments, how it can change you for good or bad. It gives advice for supervisors and even for instructors on how to help a student/survivor. You’ll even learn a bit about enlightenment.

The Arthritis Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to Alternative Therapies and Conventional Treatments for Arthritic Diseases

The complete guide to available therapies for individuals suffering from osteoarthritis and other arthritic diseases.

• The most up-to-date information on this disease that strikes one in six people.

• Includes case histories, practitioners’ perspectives, and a complete resource guide to the organizations, publications, and Internet sites devoted to arthritis.

For those suffering from arthritis and other arthritic diseases such as gout and fibromyalgia, The Arthritis Bible is the most up-to-date and complete resource to available treatments–both alternative and conventional. Forty-three million Americans–one in six of us–are afflicted with arthritis, yet the traditional medical community continues to offer only the limited number of treatments found within the narrowly proscribed boundaries of Western medicine. And while many alternative therapies do provide relief, too many have become victims of the “flavor-of-the-month” mentality, their true merits being lost amidst hype and unwarranted claims before adequate research has been done.

The Arthritis Bible supplies the latest wisdom on conventional drugs, exercise, physical therapy, diet, vitamins and minerals, traditional herbs, nutraceuticals, homeopathy, and folk remedies. It also advises how to choose the right medical approach and practitioner, and includes a complete resource guide to the organizations, publications and internet sites devoted to arthritis. For anyone seeking relief from the painful and often debilitating consequences of arthritic diseases, The Arthritis Bible is a must for the shelf.

Prescription Arthritis Drugs – Worth the Risk?

Edit Article |

Posted: Mar 28, 2008 |Comments: 0

]]>

If you’re reading this, you’re probably already aware of the dangers associated with prescription arthritis drugs. But it never hurts to have all of the facts, so let’s arm ourselves with some information on many of the most common arthritis drugs and their potential side effects.

Steroids

Steroids have been around since the discovery of cortisone in the 1950′s. Corticosteroids like Prednisone are synthetic drugs that decrease inflammation in the body by mimicking the action of the natural hormone cortisol. There are times that steroids are necessary in order to reduce inflammation that threatens to damage an organ like your heart or kidneys.

However steroids do have some debilitating potential side effects and the higher the dose, the greater the risk. Here’s just a few…

Insomnia

Acne

Eye damage (cataracts, glaucoma, blurred vision)

High blood pressure

Puffy, swollen face

Weight gain and hunger

Mood swings

Restlessness and anxiety

Osteoporosis (brittle bones) and bone loss

Decreased resistance to infections

If you already have osteoporosis or thinning bones, steroids could make it even worse. If your immune system is depressed by steroid use, you’re more likely to catch a cold or flu. You could also develop an infection like pneumonia. But if you’re suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, you already have a malfunctioning immune system! It doesn’t need the further assault of a high steroid dose.

If you find steroids less than enchanting, let’s consider NSAIDs…

NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories) came on to the scene with a lot of fanfare because they contained no steroids. They work by suppressing an enzyme that helps the body produce prostaglandins.

Certain types of prostaglandins are responsible for the pain and swelling of diseases like arthritis, so it would make sense to have less of them, right?

Problem is, prostaglandins serve other functions in the body. They protect your stomach lining. Without them, you could develop an ulcer. Even ordinary aspirin can cause your stomach to bleed if you take enough of it!

Heartburn, indigestion, vomiting, and diarrhea are also common side effects of NSAIDs. So what’s to be done now?

1999 saw the “new and improved” NSAIDs being released. They were supposed to be the perfect answer for patients seeking long-term pain relief.

COX-2 Inhibitors have fewer gastrointestinal side effects, so they were considered a safer alternative. Truly a great discovery for the new century!

Or at least until we learned that the most popular drug in the group, Vioxx (rofecoxib) increases our risk of heart attack and stroke. This was actually discovered in 2000, but it wasn’t until 2004 that Vioxx disappeared from the shelves. Patients are still suing the manufacturer for damages.

The future will probably see the release of newer, and hopefully safer arthritis drugs. No doubt the claims will be loud and long and maybe, this time, they’ll be justified.

However until medicine starts to look at the human body as a whole, we’ll continue to have these sorts of problems. Isolating a set of symptoms and trying to eliminate them, without addressing the root cause of the disease, can only create more problems than it solves.

The Arthritis Foundation’s Guide to Alternative Therapies

This is a thorough, complete guide of the most-used unconventional therapies and the scientific research that supports or dispels any claims, myths or hype associated with them. You can learn the latest about herbs, acupuncture, diet, exercise, tai chi, magnets, movement therapies, spiritual healing, mind/body therapies, and more. You’ll also learn what to expect from these treatments, how much they cost and how to find a qualified practitioner.More than 43 million people of all ages in the U.S. suffer from arthritis, an often disabling disease for which conventional medicine offers only limited relief from pain–and no cure. Arthritis patients are increasingly seeking alternative therapies, yet these have their drawbacks, too: though some have proven benefits, many others are expensive and work for only some, others are useless, and some are dangerous. This book aims to be a “common-sense guide through the maze of the most-used complementary therapies for arthritis, to help you choose wisely among the many options available,” and it succeeds beautifully. The book lists 22 complementary therapies, from familiar ones like acupuncture, meditation, tai chi, and yoga, to less accepted treatments like copper bracelets, magnets, and bee stings (don’t worry, the book isn’t recommending this, only providing information). The “Nature’s Medicines” section discusses more than 40 herbs and supplements.

The book describes each therapy and how it is used, presents scientific evidence and expert opinion, and gives tips on how to find a practitioner and information on costs, advice, cautions, and resources in a helpful and reader-friendly style. There are also guidelines for working with your doctor, choosing a therapist, and avoiding rip-offs. Author Judith Horstman, a two-time Fulbright Scholar and award-winning editor of Arthritis Today magazine, makes the point that complementary therapies cannot “cure” arthritis or replace proven medical treatments. They can, however, ease symptoms and improve your outlook, and may even enhance the effects of your conventional treatment. This is an extremely useful and beautifully illustrated book for arthritis sufferers seeking to expand their treatment as informed consumers. –Joan Price

What Is The Most Effective Psoriatic Arthritis Treatment

What follows is a holistic approach to managing psoriatic arthritis. I have always been interested in alternative or natural cures for the human body. I have full faith in conventional medicine for medical emergencies, things like stitches, dealing with broken bones etc. These types of issues are handled marvelously by conventional medicine, but what is not handled so well is the management of disease or long term illness. The solution of that a pill will fix any ill. Taking painkillers for a headache or anti-biotics for a cold have never been my style. I enjoyed learning and trying alternative cures for a sore throat or headache. This love for all things natural was pushed to the extreme when I got diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis.

Sure it’s one thing to fix a common cold with some vitamin C and garlic, but could I really fix an auto-immune disease like psoriatic arthritis? Well in theory, yes! After all we all know ‘you are what you eat’. While diet and nutrition is certainly a good starting point, we know that health is influenced by some other factors also. This article will give a brief overview of the diet aspect, for more detailed information see my article on the psoriatic arthritis diet. It will also cover stress or the mental/emotional aspect of the disease. Lastly we will discuss some of the best nutritional supplements that can help your psoriatic arthritis.

The easiest place to start with a psoriatic arthritis diet is adding more fruit and vegetables. Find good organic sources of protein which include chicken, beef, fish and eggs. Learn about healthy fats and how to add them to your diet. Never cook with vegetable oil or canola oil. Learn about cooking with stable fats, like we used to in the old days when we cooked with lard and butter. Add coconut products like the oil and the flesh to your diet. Stop eating wheat and diary. This is really important, as these foods cause inflammatory and auto-immune responses in the body. This probably sounds extreme, for more detailed information see my article of the psoriatic arthritis diet.

It has been said that stress is the cause of 90 percent of all illness. Regardless of the exact figure the role of stress or the mental aspect of disease cannot be ignored. It is a testament of the amazing capabilities of the human body to endure all the stresses we put on it. People are able to eat a poor diet, not exercises, ingest toxins and poisons etc, and the still live. But while they may not be dying they are far from healthy. Just because the body can survive on a poor lifestyle does not mean it is living in an optimal state of health and that is what we want to achieve in times of illness. Learn to handle your mental stress. I recommend meditation and yoga. These should become part of your daily schedule. Start slowly and modify the yoga to suit your current joint capabilities. Put your life and everyday situations in perspective, step back a little bit, just breathe and relax a bit more.

The last part of a psoriatic arthritis to talk about is nutritional supplements. Over the last few years there have been a lot of new anti-inflammation supplements and this is good news for psoriatic arthritis. Supplements are a pay for what you get products. I do not believe in buying supplements from the supermarket, go to a certified health practitioner and buy practitioner only supplements. These will be better quality and more potent. For anti-inflammatory purposes a good place to start is high doses of fish oils. To help with digestion and gut health a good quality probiotic. And an anti-inflammatory mixture. Try to find a product with turmeric, cat’s claw and boswelia in it. What you want is a good combination product with all the best anti-inflammatory herbs.

The goal of this article is to present an alternative to the mainstream medical approach for the management of psoriatic arthritis. I do not feel this type of information is readily available and I hope this may open people’s minds up to the possibility that drugs are not the only choice. After reading the above recommendations, some folks might think ‘gee, that seems very different to how I am currently living’. My reply is that is should be very different. If you were following anything close to the above you probably would not have an autoimmune disease and you wouldn’t be reading this article. Start with one step at a time and take each day as it comes. Try to do a little bit better than the day before.
