Juvenile arthritis or formerly called Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) is described in children under the age of 16. The word ‘rheumatoid’ was dropped from the name because it is a misnomer giving people the idea that the disease process is much like the adult Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is essentially an autoimmune disease. This is a syndrome whereby the body produces antibodies that attack its own joint tissues. What Is Inflammatory Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain Relief: A FAST Guide!

Have you ever wondered what exactly it is that causes your rheumatoid arthritis pain and what the factors involved in pain are? If you understand how arthritis pain ‘works’, it empowers you to take action in order to relieve the pain you are experiencing. If you understand your pain, you will be able to fight it! At the end of this guide, you will know how pain works what you can do about your pain.

There are various chemicals involved with causing rheumatoid arthritis pain and inflammation. Amongst others, these are prostaglandins, interleukins and immunoglobulins.

Interestingly, prostaglandins and interleukins are manufactured from the fats found in meat and dairy. This means that excessive meat in your diet can promote (or at least make possible) the production of these pain causing chemicals in your body. If your rheumatoid arthritis has a severe flare-up, it is a good idea to cut out meat and dairy for a few days and to stick to a vegetarian diet. When it comes to inflammation, there are three enzymes involved. These are called COX-1, COX-2 and 5-LOX. COX-1 is a ‘good’ enzyme because it is involved in protecting the stomach lining and the kidneys. COX-2 is the ‘bad’ enzyme because it promotes inflammation and thins out the blood. Blocking out COX-1 will reduce inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis pain, but you are left with the problem of damage to the stomach lining that could lead to ulcers. Blocking out COX-2 also relieves inflammation, but can lead to blood clotting. Most NSAIDs and pain killers like aspirin, paracetemol (Tylenol) and ibuprofen blocks both COX-1 and COX-2, logically leading to the above problems. The most common problem is damage to the stomach lining, the kidneys and the liver. As medical science developed, the thinking was geared towards finding a pain killing drug that only blocks the ‘bad’ COX-2. Consequently, drugs like Vioxx came onto the scene, because it only blocks COX-2. But, 5 years after Vioxx appeared, the manufacturers withdrew it from the market. These types of drugs became linked to causes of heart attack and stroke when used on the long term. The fact is that blocking off any enzyme in the body over a long period of time can have bad side-effects.

The other enzyme involved in rheumatoid arthritis pain and inflammation, 5-LOX, has not really received a lot of attention. Some drug combinations blocking 5-LOX and COX were found to be effective. However, the blocking of these enzymes seems to lead to some kind of breakdown of tissue in the body. In the case of arthritis, the synovial membrane, cartilage and bone begin to wear away and change shape. Using anti-inflammatory drugs are fine if they are used over a short period to treat an injury, for example. But for a disease like arthritis, that requires sustained long term use of a pain killing medication, it can lead to adverse side-effects.

The conclusion is therefore that anti-inflammatory drugs do well to treat the symptoms of pain and inflammation, but does nothing to address the cause of rheumatoid arthritis pain. Inflammation affects the whole body- that is why rheumatoid arthritis is called a systemic disease. Finding ways to treat the underlying causes of the the body in its ‘state of alarm’ is the most effective long term strategy in treating rheumatoid arthritis pain. There are various factors that could cause arthritis and inflammation.

Factors That Cause Inflammation:

A Toxic Liver

The wrong balance of bacteria in the gut can cause bacterial, fungal and parasitic infection, leaky gut syndrome and allergies. A ‘leaky gut’ allows all kind of proteins and toxins into the blood stream. Your liver has the task of dealing with these excessive amounts of toxins. When the liver can’t cope, it can lead to allergies, inflammation and ultimately, rheumatoid arthritis pain. What the liver needs are anti-oxidants like vitamins A,C and E, selenium and zinc. Anti-oxidants will empower the liver to cope with the detoxification process in the body.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas to help control blood sugar levels. If you are insulin-resistant, your body has to produce much more insulin to get enough glucose to the cells. This often results in too much glucose in the blood. Rheumatoid arthritis is a common rheumatic disease, affecting more than two million people in the United States. The disease is three times more common in women as in men. It afflicts people of all races equally. RA can affect any joint, but the most common places are the hands or feet. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) causes redness, pain, swelling or a hot (or warm) feeling in the lining of a joint, the place where 2 or more bones come together. Worldwide, about 1% of people are believed to have rheumatoid arthritis, but the rate varies among different groups of people.

The Proper Way To Meditate

Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the conditioned, “thinking” mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. There are many different meditation methods.

At the core of meditation is the goal to focus and eventually quiet your mind. As you progress, you will find that you can meditate anywhere and at any time, accessing an inner calm no matter what’s going on around you. But first, you have to learn to tame your mind.

Some people will find a five minute meditation worthwhile, for others, the benefits of longer meditation are well worth the time.

You can meditate at any time of day; some people like to start their day off with meditation, others like to end the day by clearing their mind, and some prefer to find refuge in meditation in the middle of a busy day. Generally, however, the easiest time to meditate is in the morning, before the day’s events tire your body out and give your mind more to think about.

Don’t meditate immediately following a meal, or when you are likely to be hungry. The body’s digestive system can be very distracting.

 

Make time to meditate. Set aside enough time in your daily routine for meditating. The effects of meditation are most noticeable when you do it regularly and consistently rather than sporadically.   

Any position in which you’re relaxed but your back is straight is permissible, even lying down – but be careful that you’re not so relaxed that you fall asleep. In warm weather, consider watching the clouds.

Let your attention rest on the flow of your breath. Listen to it, follow it, but make no judgments on it (such as “It sounds a little raspy…maybe I’m getting a cold?”).

To overcome verbal chatter, recite a mantra (repetition of a sacred word). A single word like “aum” uttered at a steady rhythm is best. You can recite it verbally or just with the voice in your mind. Beginners may find it easier to count their breaths. Try counting your breath from 1 to 10, then simply start again at 1.

To circumvent images that keep intruding on your thoughts, visualize a place that calms you. It can be real or imaginary. Imagine you are at the top of a staircase leading to a peaceful place. Count your way down the steps until you are peaceful and relaxed.

For some people, focusing attention on a point or object does exactly the opposite of what meditation is all about. It takes you back to the life of ‘focus’, ‘concentration’, ‘strain’. In this case, as an alternative to the above techniques, some meditators recommend un-focusing your attention. Instead of focusing attention on a point or an object, this type of meditation is achieved by attaining a state of zero. Take your attention above all thoughts till a point you lose all attention and all thoughts.

 Find or create a quiet, relaxing environment. It’s especially important, when you’re starting out, to avoid any obstacles to attention. Turn off any TV sets, phone(s) or other noisy appliances. If you play music, make sure it’s calm, repetitive and gentle, so as not to break your concentration. Meditating outside can be conducive, as long as you don’t sit near a busy roadway or another source of loud noise.

 Sit in on level ground. Sit on a cushion if the ground is uncomfortable. You don’t have to twist your limbs into the lotus position or adopt any unusual postures. The important thing is to keep your back straight, as this will help with breathing later on.

 Keep your eyes half-open without focusing on anything. If this is too distracting or difficult, close them or find something steady to focus on such as a small candle flame.

 Breathe deeply and slowly from your abdomen rather than your chest. You should feel your stomach rise and fall while your chest stays relatively still. Healthy, stress relieving breathing may be done by inhaling for count of 3, exhaling for count of 6, repeat over and over for 15 to 20 minutes. This expels the used air and more completely oxygenates your blood, lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Many high blood pressure patients have dropped their blood pressure as much as 50 points, allowing them to decrease or eliminate the need for medication. This breathing exercise should be done on a regular basis.

 Relax every muscle in your body. Don’t rush this, as it takes time to fully relax. Do it bit by bit, starting at your toes, and working up to your head, until the tension melts away. 

Focus your attention. You may notice that your mind wants to wander, bouncing from thought to thought, making observations about other things. Gently bring your attention back to a single point until it rests there naturally. The goal is to allow the “chattering” in your mind to gradually fade away. Find an “anchor” to settle your mind.

 

Silence your mind. Once you’ve trained your mind to focus on just one thing at a time, the next step is focus on nothing at all, essentially “clearing” your mind. This requires tremendous discipline but is the pinnacle of meditation. After focusing on a single point as described in the previous step, you can either cast it away, or observe it impartially and let it come and then go, without labeling it as “good” or “bad”. Take the same approach to any thoughts which return to your mind until silence perseveres.

What you do with a silent mind is up to you. Some people find that it is a good time to introduce an intention or a desired outcome to the subconscious mind. Others prefer to “rest” in the rare silence that meditation affords. Read up on the different type of meditation and their purposes. 

You should be comfortable enough to concentrate, but not so comfortable that you feel the urge to fall asleep

Make some effort to be mindful of your mood and thoughts when not meditating. You may notice that you feel calmer, happier, and sharper on days when you have meditated, and notice a decrease in these qualities when you have not.

It may be beneficial to mentally review or replay the previous day at the start of your sessions, if you can do so in a relaxed, passive way. This often happens naturally, and sometimes it’s best to allow this to happen, as long as you don’t get emotionally wrapped up or let it go on too long before beginning meditation. This procedure is known as “processing” of recent events, and becoming skilled at performing a non-judgmental review of events does much to increase awareness and emotional well-being.

The benefits of meditation can be experienced long before the practitioner has been successful in maintaining focus or clearing the mind, simply as a result of the practice.

Set aside a specific time each day for meditation, but don’t overdo it. If 20-30 minutes in the morning isn’t enough, add another session later in the day instead of trying for a single, longer session.

It is easy to lose track of time while meditating. Being concerned about time can be distracting to meditation. Some people find it liberating to set a timer and let it be concerned about how long you have to meditate. Choose a gentle timer. If it is too jarring, the anticipation of the alarm can be distracting also.

Some people find that praying can be an effective form of meditation, and they believe in meditating, or “praying through,” perhaps for hours to find peace. For peace, naturally your prayer would not be “begging” but more like being gratefull for your breath and acknowledging your many blessings… rather than complaining.

If you are meditating with a specific intention, you can use the Best Me Technique to pre-experience the rewards of a long-term goal in meditation as well as in self-hypnosis.

Warnings

Don’t expect immediate results. The purpose of meditation is not to turn you into a zen master overnight. Meditation works best when it is done for its own sake, without becoming attached to results.

If you find your mind is wandering, try not to scold or beat up on yourself about it. Wandering restlessly is the normal state of the conditioned mind. This is the first lesson many people learn in meditation and it is a valuable one. Simply, gently, invite your attention back to your breath, remembering that you’ve just had a small but precious “awakening.” Becoming aware of your wandering mind is a success, not a failure.

Some people find it’s difficult to meditate immediately before bedtime. If you’re very sleepy, you may find yourself nodding off. Conversely, meditating may energize your mind, making it more difficult to fall asleep.

As you meet other people who meditate, you’ll encounter a few who will boast about their endurance for long meditation sessions-even hours and hours at a sitting. Don’t be tempted to change your practice to “keep up.” Meditation is not competitive.

Avoid bad dreams: if pleading and begging in prayer is your form of meditation, change that to being thankful and blessing others–in prayer and in life-to help you progress, sleep, and avoid bad dreams, proven by practitioners.

Meditation is a great thing. It’s difficult to disagree with this statement because even recent scientific findings effectively proven this ancient understanding today. The advantages of meditation are countless and whole book would barely be sufficient only to name them.

Among positive results of meditation is enhanced psychological and physical health, balanced emotions, increased creativity, stress alleviation, amplified productivity and personal efficiency, improved mood, strengthened buoyancy and personal energy… and list goes on up to horizon.

Water exercises are highly recommended along with the use of elastic bands.

Supportive devices like knee braces can be used. In most cases, the arthritis is centered on a single side of the knee, so braces are effective in providing stability to one side. Two different forms of braces are available. A support brace provides the aid the entire knee requires, where an up-loader brace shifts the pressure away from the specific part of the knee that is experiencing the pain. Shoes or inserts that are considered to be energy absorbing are found useful for some patients as well as walking devices like a cane.

The use of oral steroids and anti-inflammatory medicines help to reduce the amount of inflammation and pain felt in the knee. If over the counter medicines like ibuprofen or naproxen are not strong enough, prescription strength medicines are used. Osteotomy is performed to reshape the bones in the knee and is only performed if one side of the knee is damaged. Arthroplasty is a replacement surgery where an artificial joint is used.

Arthritis Medication and Side Effects

“You have to take the good with the bad.”


Whoever coined that phrase originally could have been referring to arthritis medications. While medications can make physical movement easier and less painful, they can also do some things you’d rather they didn’t. Upset stomach, dry mouth, drowsiness, and increased risk of infection are some of the more benign of these side effects, but there are others that are decidedly worse.


Some side effects will disappear on their own as your body adjusts to the drug. For others, you can alleviate side effects by taking medications with food, supplementing nutrients the drug can affect, or using other medications to ease the first drug’s effects (e.g. acetaminophen to ease injection pain, an artificial saliva product to ease dry mouth, or an antacid to ease stomach upset). For still others, you may have to learn to live with the side effects, especially if the benefits of taking the drug outweigh the consequences.


Sometimes, the bad exceeds the good and side effects can signal something life-threatening. Here are some side effects of the most commonly used arthritis medications that require immediate attention:


NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs)

Rapid or irregular pulse, hives on the face or mouth, wheezing, or tightness in the chest may indicate an allergic reaction to the drug. Stop taking the NSAID and get medical attention immediately.


Symptoms such as dark, tarry stools, or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds could mean a bleeding ulcer. Unusual bleeding or bruising could mean the drugs are interfering with clotting. If you have one of these problems, call your doctor right away.

If you start to notice symptoms of diabetes (e.g. increased thirst, frequent urination and/or blurred vision), or neurological problems (e.g. hallucinations or rapid and wide mood swings), call your doctor as soon as possible.


These are some of the most common drugs used to combat the pain of arthritis, but there are many others used for all forms of arthritis and its related conditions. Any drug, for any condition, carries the risk of side effects. Before beginning any medication, read the drug’s package insert. Ask your doctor if there are side effects you should watch for and what to do if you experience them. And, pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you’re taking a medication, even one you’ve taken for a while, and you notice a problem, call your doctor.

Only in dogs it is called  Caudal Cruciate Ligament Injury. It is a very common condition in dogs. Osteochondritis dissecans is a common problem in the ankle joint, or hock joint as it is referred to in dogs. This is similar to the shoulder condition where a small piece of bone came loose in a small dog and now causes pain and inflammation.

The inflammatory arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are common in people and less so in dogs. Nevertheless, just like in people joint pain should be taken seriously and a cause of pain should be identified. Your veterinarian will be able to diagnose the problem and provide treatment for arthritis if it is needed.

The sad truth is that most of us are aware of the benefits of meditation, and yet very few of us actually have a regular meditation practice. Yet this article will show you what meditation really is and give you simple tips for incorporating it into your daily life without changing your current schedule.

So what is meditation? Meditation is about being fully present in the moment and in that moment you are aware of the truth of who you are (beyond your mind, your body or your situation).

Have you ever been in awe of a beautiful sunset so much so that you weren’t thinking about what happened five minutes ago or about what you were going to do in the future? And as you took in the majestic sunset, you noticed how you felt really alive inside. You felt pure bliss, joy or peace. And maybe even had a feeling like, It doesn’t get any better than this! Well that is meditation!

We often make meditation much more complicated than it really is. Just remember that meditation is about being present in the moment. Therefore, any moment can be your meditation. According to an international survey that I compiled (with results from people in 44 different countries) the biggest obstacle people face in incorporating meditation into their daily lives is: TIME.

We don’t have enough time to meditate. (I originally thought this was an American dilemma but discovered that this is a common obstacle for most people around the world). We all have only 24 hours in a day and most of us lead busy lives filled with work, family and other obligations.

Many of us barely have time to workout among the myriad of daily activities that need to get done. Well don’t worry; here are three simple ways you can start incorporating meditation into your daily life right now without taking any time out of your current schedule.

TIP #1- Don’t Wait-Meditate

Start by converting your waiting time into meditating time. The average person waits 42-60 minutes a day! Think about it: we wait on hold on the phone, we wait for computer programs to download, we wait for appointments and we wait in line at the bank or grocery store.

Yet, those precious moments spent waiting, could be converted to meditating time instead. So next time you are waiting on hold on the phone, take a moment to notice your breath. Or, next time you are waiting in line at the bank take a moment to smile from the inside. While you are waiting for an appointment, notice the aliveness inside your body.

Recently, while waiting for a dentists’ appointment I allowed the aquarium in the waiting room to be my meditation. I sat there and noticed the vibrant colors and graceful movements of the fish. So allow waiting time to be your meditating time. If we each did this one simple thing, we’d have a regular meditation practice.

And the other great benefit to converting waiting time into meditating time is that you find you don’t mind waiting. I enjoyed being 20 minutes early to my chiropractic appointment because I thought, “Great, I can get in a 20 minute meditation!” Here’s what Amy Bush Bradley, a mother of three says, “I think the Don’t Wait, Meditate pledge was one of the best things I have done for myself.

It gives me such a pleasurable thing to do during normal “waiting” time that I actually look forward to going places where I will have wait time!”

TIP #2- Pick a Daily Activity in which to incorporate your meditation Another simple thing you can do is pick a daily activity where you can incorporate meditation.

Below are some examples:

* brushing your teeth
 * showering
* emptying the dishwasher
* walking
* eating
* folding the laundry

For example, when you brush your teeth in the morning take a few moments to notice your breath while you are doing it. Or when you shower, pay attention to how the water feels moving across your face or head. When you empty the dishwasher notice the placement of each dish or feel the aliveness in your hands as you put each dish away.

And yes, you can even practice meditation while eating. A participant in one of our 21 day meditation circles decided to practice meditation during her daily breakfast. She paid attention to her breathing as she ate. She noticed the texture and taste of the food she put in her mouth.

TIP #3- Have your dog or cat be your meditation

The majority of the population owns a pet, yet we don’t realize that our dog or cat can be our meditation. One time while meditating my cat Vinnie came up to me and started meowing. He wanted my attention. And rather than try to ignore him, I opened my eyes and started petting him. I noticed the feel of his fur while petting him. He became my meditation.

And if you have a dog, walking the dog can be your meditation. When you walk your dog have you noticed how your dog is just fully in the moment; taking in everything? Well you can do that as well! Next time you are walking your dog, take in your surroundings. Notice the colors and shapes of the trees, houses, etc. Feel your feet as they touch the concrete.

Our dogs and cats can also be great meditation timers if we allow them to be. Often while sitting at my computer throughout the day, Vinnie will come up and demand attention by meowing. I will stop what I am doing (if only for a moment) and sit on the floor with him and just be with him. As you can see, anything can be your meditation. Your life can literally be a meditation.

Those moments you spend throughout the day while waiting, doing a daily activity, driving or walking your dog will really make a difference in your life. If you implement any one, or more, of these tips into your life right now, you will have a regular meditation practice and you will experience more joy, more peace and less stress in your life and your relationships.
